He, She, Them, They

  Each morning I take my dog on a meditative walk to explore the woods and waterways of Beach Forest. Observing the overall vista then noting the abstracted shapes, light, and color that are created by tree limbs and grasses. Watching the interplay of background and foreground when the wind slightly shifts. With clarity of thought and an appreciation of Nature I return to my studio. This is the inspiration and motivation that guides my current body of work.

My painting process begins with an arbitrary, multicolored under-painting that creates the groundwork for what is to follow. I use the under-painting in such a way as to create the unexpected. The method of exposing that under layer is part of the exploration and discovery in my work. The back and forth of scraping down and building up the top surfaces keeps the work in constant flux and challenges me artistically and my ability to transform. What seemed to be arbitrary at first in the under-painting suddenly makes sense in the overall expression. The choices I make while painting are not always conscious ones; they can be intuitive or even counterintuitive. I go wherever the exploration leads me. The final work is a convergence of representation then abstracted through process.
